You may not be surprised to learn that I frequently doodle in meetings and training sessions. Some people think doodling is a sign of inattention. Others say it helps them stay focussed. I really have no idea. It certainly doesn’t indicate engagement, but I’m pretty sure I can listen to someone while I’m doodling. Maybe there’s some science on it somewhere.

Anyway, over the last year or so, I’ve found myself repeatedly drawing this symbol on my copy of the agenda. I really have no idea why except it’s a satisfying shape to draw.

I wondered if it wasn’t a window into my subconscious. It looks a bit like a pound sign. Maybe it’s an expression of my money worries.

Then I thought, maybe Freud was wrong about everything. Then I wouldn’t even believe the subconscious was a real thing, and I probably wouldn’t use free-association to dig into it either. Then what?

It’s a symbol I like looking at. It’s nice to draw.

Symbols have a lot of power. Does this one?

Another thing I like to doodle is made-up Arabic and Chinese. When I got home the other night, I decided to spend a little while writing in a language which I don’t understand. Here’s what I drew:

I made this table over the last couple of weekends. We found the top in the street and bought the oak legs / bannisters at The Wood Store in Brighton for £3 a piece.
